First time to the dentist

Among the many dilemmas which arise during the years a child is growing, every parent faces the inevitable decision of choosing the right moment for the child’s first visit to the dentist. The period from the beginning of the growth of milk teeth to the child’s first year is considered ideal for that first meeting. This event is of equal importance to both you and your child. Given that the period of childhood is extremely important in your child developing a beautiful smile, we must give you all the information necessary and teach you the proper way to maintain oral hygiene, as well as advising on the preventive measures which should be applied at various ages.

Preventive measures at the right time, such as fluoride and sealing, greatly reduce the risk of even the slightest caries in your child’s teeth. Because these treatments are painless and non-invasive, the first dentist visit will be pleasant for your child and they will remember it in a positive light. This means that the first great step has been taken so that your child will go to every subsequent visit with a smile and with no feeling of fear.

Preparation for the first visit to the dentist

Before children visit the dentist for the first time, it’s very important for parents to prepare them, because every mistake at this stage could result in a fear which is very difficult to overcome. The child should be encouraged to see his first meeting with the dentist as the beginning of a new friendship. Explain to them in terms they will accept that the dentist will be their new friend who will always look after the health of their teeth. Avoid using such terms as needle, drill, forceps and pain. Because children pick up on non-verbal signals of fear, it’s important that they should be taken to the dentist by a parent who has no feelings of fear or dislike about dentistry. Don’t forget that this is one of the most important steps in shaping your child’s attitude to the dentist.

Monitoring changes in teeth

Another very important point for the proper growth and development of your child’s teeth and jaws is monitoring changes in teeth by a dentist. A regular dental check-up each four to six months is the ideal way to avoid undesirable consequences later. It is of great important to pay particular attention to even the slightest carious changes which, if they are not dealt with in time, can result in the early loss of teeth. Every tooth lost prematurely has the potential to lead to multiple irregularities which later may require long-term therapy.
This is why a regular dental check-up is the least you can do for the health of your child’s teeth.

Kindergartens

Many kindergartens have visited our office in order to familiarise children with dentists through games, and to free them of the fear of visiting a dentist. We are proud to have contributed in some small way to the fact that a number of our youngest citizens are happy to go to the dentist.
